When the time comes to install vinyl siding on your home there are a few things you need to consider because siding offers a multitude of benefits. However, contrary to popular belief, all vinyl siding is not created equally. Some vinyl siding products are made to increase thermal efficiency, while others are made only to increase the exterior beauty, and still more are created to reflect all of the above.
To help our potential customers get started we have listed possible estimates into three categories. This will help to simplify an otherwise complicated shopping experience since we all know that shopping is useless if you don’t know what questions to ask.
Contractor Grade
Generally these will be among the cheapest of the estimates you will get. However, we have to ask ourselves, “How could someone use the best materials, have the best workmanship, and have the best warranties and still be the cheapest price?” I am sure we can all come up with the same conclusion: That is impossible! Something must be missing! And we would be correct in our assumption.
Vinyl siding comes in different thickness: 38 thousandths of an inch (.038) to 50 thousandths of an inch (.050). with .040, .042, .044, .046, .048 in the middle. You will usually find .038 to .042 with the “pick up truck” guy’s estimate. Vinyl siding that thin tends to fade quickly, has a potential to crack, and age rather quickly. Typically the insulation used has a thickness of 3/8 of an inch which carries an “R” value of 1.5. If your house was built before 1970 your “R” value is approximately an R4. After 1970 an R7. So as you can see, this particular siding job is not going to increase the homes thermal efficiency as much as it will make it maintenance free and possibly look nicer (depending upon how skilled the laborers are at trimming the wood work, which makes or brakes the outward appearance of a vinyl siding job).
Reputable Contractor
By reputable contractor we mean a company who has a professional location (as opposed to working out of their home or truck) and been in business for some time with an established reputation (as a BBB membership, etc).
These companies usually offer a thicker, more durable panel which is more resistant to fading, wears better over the years, and has a better resistance to cracking. These panels are usually in the .042- .044 range of thickness.
You will still find though quite a lot of these companies offering the same R 1.5 however more often than not they will upgrade the insulation to 1/2 inch thickness which carries with it an R Value of 2.8. Now that same home with an R Value of 4 improves to a meager R 6.5.: a little better than 3/8 (R 1.5) but you can still do much better.
High End Contractors
These are contractors who always seem to be on the higher side of the estimates that you will receive. In part because a larger company carries a much higher overhead (with T. V. and newspaper ads costing what they do these days) and their tendency to carry thicker (more durable), longer (less seams), panels that will insulate your home quite a bit better. In some cases this siding can bring your home up to an R12 rating which on an average home can save as much as $700 year on heating costs. Again, depending on the skill level of the workers who install the trim around windows and doors, this type of siding job will not only make your home more beautiful but will also make more energy efficient.
